The Spaniard was three behind at the turn, and trailed the German by two with five holes to play. Otaegui won the 14th hole with a par and had three straight birdies on Nos. 15-17 to clinch victory.

Otaegui won six of the eight holes after the turn on the Beckenbauer Course at Bad Griesbach, including the final four, to claim his first win in his 123rd event.

Johan Carlsson of Sweden defeated Spain's Alejandro Canizares 3 and 2 to win the third-place playoff.

Siem was two behind the Englishman going into the last four holes but leveled it up with birdies on the 15th and 16th before sealing victory on the 19th.

The German, who defeated Belgium's Thomas Detry 3 and 2 in the last 16 earlier Saturday, will face Johan Carlsson next as he seeks his fifth European Tour title.

Carlsson defeated defending champion Anthony Wall 1 up in their quarterfinal.

Also through to the last four are Alejandro Canizares and Adrian Otaegui, who will meet in an all-Spanish semifinal on Sunday.

Canizares needed 20 holes to get past Chris Paisley of England, while Otaegui had a 2 and 1 win over Germany's Alexander Knappe.

Play was delayed by an hour in the morning after heavy rain and strong winds brought down a tree and forced the ninth tee to be moved on the Beckenbauer Course at Bad Griesbach.

Round 2 - Anthony Wall continues title defence

August 19, 2017

Defending champion Anthony Wall produced his second big finish in as many days to move into the last 16 at the Paul Lawrie Match Play with a 1-up victory over Haydn Porteous on Friday.

The Englishman, who won the European Tour event when it was staged in Scotland last year, was behind going into the last two holes but won them both for a clash against Ryder Cup winner Jamie Donaldson.

Local favorite Marcel Siem delighted the home fans on the Beckenbauer Course at Bad Griesbach with a birdie-birdie finish to beat Mikko Ilonen 2-up. Ilonen had had the most convincing win of the first round.

Siem set up a meeting with Belgium's Thomas Detry, who had a 3 and 1 win over Spain's Nacho Elvira.

Siem was joined by compatriots Alexander Knappe and Florian Fritsch, but Maximilian Kieffer could not make it four Germans from four in the last 16 as he lost to Marcus Fraser 2 and 1.

Tournament host Paul Lawrie fought hard but lost 2 and 1 to Alejandro Canizares, who next faces Paul Dunne. The Irishman defeated Jens Fahrbring 4 and 3.

The Englishman won the European Tour event, his first title in more than 16 years, when it was held in Scotland in 2016. It is being staged in Germany this year and all four German participants - Florian Fritsch, Maximilian Kiefer, Alexander Knappe and Marcel Siem - advanced.

Edoardo Molinari also progressed after beating Ryder Cup vice captain Robert Karlsson on the 24th hole, making it the longest match in the three-year history of the tournament.

Lawrie was 1 down with three to play but recovered to beat Peter Hanson on the 20th hole as the former British Open champion started another bid to win the tournament he is hosting.

Mikko Ilonen beat Matthieu Pavon 8 and 7 in the most convincing win of the first round, while Adrian Otaegui was 9 under in his 16 holes in beating Gary Stal 4 and 2.
