Howell spared qualifying

Loch Lomond, Scotland, 11th July 1998 -   Swindon's David Howell gained instant compensation for his failure to win his first European Tour title at Loch Lomond today.

Finishing joint second spared the 23-year-old from having to
qualify for the Open Championship next week.

Five exempt spots were on offer from a mini-Order of Merit which
ran from the Volvo PGA Championship to the Standard Life event.
The other four were claimed by French Open champion Sam Torrance, Irish Open winner David Carter, former Ryder Cup midlander Peter Baker and Australian Peter Senior.

Swede Dennis Edlund's triple-bogey seven on the 15th at Loch
Lomond cost him dear. Although he finished joint second he needed to be runner-up on his own to make it and he missed that by one shot.
