Money The winner of the 1998 Open
Championship will receive £300,000, an increase of £50,000 on the cheque that
Justin Leonard received last year at Royal Troon. These
latest increases take the total on offer to a record £1.75 million and reflect
the R & A's determination to keep the Open's prize money in line with the
other three majors. The recent dramatic
rise in prize money, almost doubling in the last seven years, is highlighted by
the amount Tom Watson received at Royal Birkdale in 1983 for the last of his five
Open wins. Then, he received £40,000 out of a total prize fund of £300,000. The
first winner at Royal Birkdale, Peter Thomson, in 1954 received £750 from a total
of just £3,500.
