& History First played at Kilton Forest aged 13 with half set bought
by grandparents two years earlier after watching Jack Nicklaus win 1986 US Masters.
Maths teacher father, John, now a 13-handicapper, took up
game same time. Scratch at 16. "My parents brought me up the right way,"
he said. "They made huge sacrifices; I'll always be grateful to them."
Competitive sportsman at school - enjoyed rugby, cricket
and played half-winger at football. Supports Nottingham Forest, though a shareholder
in Sheffield United. Coached by former Tour player Peter Cowen. In 32 days at
end of 1997 won Volvo Masters (£166,000), finished runner-up Subaru Sarazen World
Cup (£144,000), won Taiheiyo Masters (£130,000), tied 21st in Dunlop Phoenix Open
(£7,800) and won Australian Open (£90,000). European
