Valderrama, Spain, 23rd September - "I always thought it would take a long, long time to have as good a team as the one we had at Muirfield Village ten years ago. I was wrong... and I'm glad I was!

"I think the team we have for 1997 at Valderrama is better. I'm very confident we are going to win."

"This is going to be a great match. The last seven matches have all been fantastic - now we are going to playing in Spain so that is something very special. We can expect a lot of excitement. There will be strong support from the fans for both sides, but my main desire is that they remain true and fair in the tradition of this great sport.

Ballesteros named Nick Faldo and Jesper Parnevik as his wild card selections.

"Nick has a tremendous record in the Ryder Cup. If I had to bet my life on playing the last hole, and trust someone, then Nick Faldo would be my choice. We all have to remember that at Oak Hill two years ago he really opened the door for Europe to win the Ryder Cup."

Jesper as we know has played fantastic on the US Tour this year. He knows all the American players. He is one of the five rookies on our team - and I don't have any doubts that they, like the experienced players, are going to play well. What we have is the perfect balance.

"Now I am looking forward to the challenge and the responsibility of being the Captain at Valderrama. For me it is a great honour to Captain the European Team, and we are all anticiptaing a wonderful match on a wonderful golf course."
