The
qualifying process for the Johnnie Walker European Ryder Cup team is based on
performances in all Volvo Ranking events between the One 2 One British Masters
on August 28 -3 1 1996, up to the week ending 31st August 1997. Additional
monies won in the 1997 US Masters, US Open and US PGA Championship by European
players eligible for selection for the European team will be added with an exchange
rate based on the £/$ rate on the first Thursday of the tournament.
From this procedure the leading ten players automatically qualify for the Ryder
Cup.The team Captain, Severiano Ballesteros, will select the remaining two players.
If the team Captain holds one of the leading ten places in the Johnnie Walker
Qualifying Points List on 31st August 1997, then he has the option to stand down
and select one other player of his choice. The United
States Team for the 1997 Ryder Cup is being selected by way of points earned from
the beginning of 1996 through to and including the 1997 US PGA Championship at
Winged Foot, New York, on August 13 - 16th 1997. The top ten in the US Team standings
at that time will automatically qualify and Tom Kite, the US Team Captain, will
select two other players. points contributing to the US Team Standings are awarded
to the leading ten players on each PGA Tour event with the points weighted towards
the major championships and 1997: The Masters, US Open, Open Golf Championship,
US PGA Championship (1996/1997): 1st - 225/300; 2nd - 135/180; 3rd - 45/60; 9th
- 10/20; 10th - 15/20h. All other PGA Tour events (1996/1997): 1st - 75/150;
2nd - 45/90; 3rd - 40/80; 4th - 35/70; 5th - 30/60; 6th- 25/50; 7th - 20/40; 8th
- 15/30; 9th - 30/40; 10th - 5/10. If a player who is ineligible finishes
in one of those positions then no points are awarded for that position. In order
to be eligible, a player must be a US citizen and a member of the PGA of America. |
