Karlsson leads by two-shots going into the final round

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 28th February 1998 - Robert Karlsson shot a 5-under-par 67 today to take a two-shot lead after the third round of the Dubai Desert Classic.

Karlsson, a 28-year-old Swede, fired six birdies as he continued to set the pace in the European PGA Tour event with an 18-under 198 after 54 holes on the par-72 Emirates Golf Course.

"It's a bit too exciting for me," Karlsson said. "I missed at the beginning and had a few birdies, and my key for tomorrow is to keep playing the same style."

Spaniard Ignacio Garrido was two shots back after carding a 66 for a 54-hole score of 200. Garrido, who said he was inspired to play with Australian great Greg Norman, had six birdies. Garrido left the Spanish army to follow in his father's footsteps as a professional golfer.

Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal shrugged off a bout of flu to move into a third-place tie with 1994 Desert Classic champion Ernie Els of South Africa at 15-under 201.

Olazabal, who considered pulling out Friday because of his bad cold, fired a 6-under 65.

"I am feeling much better today," said Olazabal.

Els, whose 63 on Friday put him into contention, shot a 5-under 67.

Norman is at 13-under 203, one shot behind Ian Woosnam.
