Lee Westwood poised to make his first US breakthrough

New Orleans, 4th April 1998 - Lee Westwood of Britain fired a 5-under-par 67 today to sneak one stroke past Steve Flesch and take the lead after the third round of the $1.7 million Freeport-McDermott Classic at the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans.

Westwood, a 24-year-old who played for the victorious European Ryder Cup squad last year, recorded his third straight sub-70 round to move to 12-under 204. Although he has won four times on the international circuit, he is looking for his first PGA Tour win.

Flesch, a former Nike Tour standout, bogeyed the final hole and fell out of a tie for the top spot with a 71 for 205, one shot better than Duffy Waldorf, who shot a 70. Six players are four shots off the lead at 8-under 208, including first-round leader Glen Day, who bounced back from a 75 with a 69.

Ronnie Black carded a 70 and is alone at 209, a stroke better than Trevor Dodds, Jeff Gallagher and Davis Love III, who fired a 6-under 66 for the best round of the day.

The English Turn Golf and Country Club is a par-72 layout that measures 7,116 yards.

First prize is $306,000.
