| Berlin,
Germany, 8th August 1998 -
Ignacio
Garrido of Spain solved one of Europe's toughest courses today with a 4-under-par
68 and took a three-stroke lead after three rounds of the German Open.
The European Ryder Cup
player, whose only career victory came at this tournament last year, pulled ahead
of the field with a 9-under-par 207 total. Five
players shared second at 210. "I
feel they have to take the title away from me now, which is nice," said Garrido.
Garrido, who
has missed eight cuts this season, eagled the first hole and seized the lead from
New Zealand's Michael Campbell with a sixth hole birdie. Campbell
shared second along with India's Jeev Singh, Mark Roe and Andrew Beal of England
and little-known Frenchman Olivier Edmond, who doesn't have a tour card. Only
27 players were under par after Friday's cut at Sporting Club Berlin. But
on a windless sunny day numerous players finally solved the tough Nick Faldo-designed
course for sub-par rounds. Germany's
Bernhard Langer, a five-time winner of the event, fired one of the day's best
rounds at 67 and was five strokes back.
