Huston moves into four stroke lead

Honolulu, Hawaii, 14th February 1998 - John Huston extended his lead by scoring a 6-under-par 66 today in the third round of the $1.8 million Hawaiian Open at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

The 36-year-old Huston is 22-under 194 for the tournament, four strokes ahead of Frank Lickliter. Huston had a two-shot lead after the second round over Skip Kendall, who posted a 70 today and has fallen into a fifth-place tie. Kendall is coming off a playoff loss to Scott Simpson in last week's Buick Invitational.

Huston, who as a member of the top 50 in career earnings exercised his right to play on the Tour this year, last won a tournament in 1994 at the Doral-Ryder Open. His best performance in 1997 was ninth place at the MasterCard Colonial.

Lickliter, whose highest career finish was a tie for fourth at the 1997 Bell Canadian Open, moved to 18-under 198 by firing a 66 today.

Greg Kraft and Olin Browne are tied at 17-under. Kraft followed his second-round 67 with a 63 today and Browne fired his second straight 66.

Kendall, Trevor Dodds and Robert Gamez are tied at 16-under. Dodds and Gamez each carded a 65 today.

The trio is followed by a group of six golfers including Kelly Gibson, Brandel Chamblee, Duffy Waldorf, Steve Stricker, Tom Byrum and Tom Watson -- at 15-under 201.

Gibson shot a 65 today, Chamblee carded a 66 and Waldorf posted a 67. Stricker fired a 68, Byrum shot a 69 and Watson finished with a 70.

Paul Stankowski, last year's champion, shot a 68 and is 9-under overall. None of the current top 10 finished among the top 10 last year at this event and none have ever won the tournament.

The Waialae Country Club is a par-72 layout that measures 7,012 yards.

First prize is $324,000.
