Maggert maintains one shot lead

Coral Springs, Florida, 13th March 1998 - Jeff Maggert made three straight birdies en route to a 4-under-par 68 today (Friday) and maintained a one-shot lead after the second round of the $1.8 million Honda Classic at the TPC at Heron Bay in Coral Springs, Florida.

Maggert, whose only other victory also came in Florida at the 1993 Walt Disney World Classic, struggled early but caught fire over the final seven holes to move to 9-under 135 through 36 holes. He has a one-stroke lead over former U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, who finished strongly for a 6-under 66.

Former champions Stuart Appleby of Australia and Mark Calcavecchia are tied for third at 7-under 137. Appleby, who posted his first PGA victory here last year, and Calcavecchia, the 1987 winner, shot 67s.

Colin Montgomerie of Scotland, still trying for his first victory on American soil, and Vijay Singh of Fiji head a group of seven players at 6-under 138. Singh stretched the longest current streak of consecutive cuts made to 51. Also three strokes off the lead are Stewart Cink, Jerry Kelly, Brent Geiberger, Kevin Sutherland and Barry Cheesman.

Appleby's one-stroke victory last year helped him become the first graduate of the PGA's qualifying tournament to earn more than $1 million the following year.

John Daly, who began the day one shot off the lead, struggled to a 4-over 76 and barely survived the cut at even-par 144. Daly, trying for his first win since his latest bout with alcoholism, bogeyed the first three holes and four of the first five.

The par-72 Tournament Players Club measures 7,268 yards.

First prize is $324,000.
