Paris,
France, 27th June 1998 - Michael
Campbell rolled in a 13-foot eagle putt at the 18th hole today and tied Sam Torrance
for the third-round lead in the French Open. Campbell,
a 29-year-old New Zealander, shot a 3-under-par 69, while Torrance, the second-round
leader from Scotland, had a 72. They have 54-hole scores of 206 over the French
National course. "Surprisingly,
after all I've been through, I feel very comfortable," Campbell said. "This
is a huge step for me. It's all a question of perseverance." He
had tendinitis in his left wrist at the end of 1995 and forfeited his European
PGA Tour card the following year. "I
was beating my head against a wall for two years and thinking about having to
sell golf balls for a living," Campbell said. England's
David Howell and Australian Matthew Goggin both shot 69s to tie for third, two
shots back. Germany's
Bernhard Langer made a move with a 68 which pulled him into a four-way tie at
209. Tom Gillis
of Lake Orio, Mich., shot a 66 and was in a group at 209. Gillis had seven birdies
and only one bogey. Colin
Montgomerie had a 73. He was nine shots off the pace. |
