Gibson Tied for Lead with Geiberger at Suspended Phoenix Open

Scottsdale, Arizona, 23rd January 1998 - Kelly Gibson birdied four of the final six holes today to move into a tie for the lead with Brent Geiberger when darkness suspended play in the second round of the $2.5 million Phoenix Open at the TPC of Scottsdale in Arizona.

Gibson and Geiberger, both seeking their first PGA Tour titles, are tied at 9-under. Gibson completed his round, recording just one bogey against six birdies in firing a 5-under 66. Geiberger, who started on the back nine, had three birdies and a bogey before his round was cut short after 14 holes.

Only 12 players were unable to finish the round, which was delayed 30 minutes this morning due to frost. Play was suspended at 8:02 p.m. EST and will resume at 10:30 am EST on Saturday. Play also was suspended due to darkness on Thursday and five players completed their first rounds today.

Defending champion Steve Jones, a Phoenix native, recorded five birdies on the front nine to take the lead at 11-under, but faltered on the back side and slipped into a tie for second at 8-under. Also one shot back are Vijay Singh of Fiji, who shot a 6-under 65, and David Duval, who completed 17 holes.

First-round leader Mike Hulbert, seeking his first win since the 1991 Anheuser-Busch Classic, stumbled to a 1-over 72 and is two shots off the pace along with Steve Stricker.

The par-71 TPC of Scottsdale measures 6,992 yards. First prize is $450,000.
