Mitchell wins by one shot for his third European Tour victoryPenina,
Algarve, 22nd March 1998 - Peter Mitchell of England earned
his third career PGA European Tour victory today, firing a 3-under-par 70 round
to take the Portuguese Open by one stroke. Mitchell
finished at 18-under 274, edging Swede Jarmo Sandelin and Englishman David Gilford,
who tied for second. Tied for fourth at 276 over the 6,903-yard Penina course
were Scotsman Sam Torrance, Spaniard Eduardo Romero and England's Jonathan Lomas.
Mitchell, winner
of the Austrian Open in 1992 and the Madeira Island Open last year, received $96,244.
Sandelin, winner
of the Canary Islands Open in 1995 and the 1996 Madeira Island Open, carded a
final-round 67. He missed a chance to force a playoff by three-putting from just
off the edge of the green at the final hole. Seve
Ballesteros, winless in three years, shot a closing 76 and finished at 290.
