Round Scores - incomplete Rain
interrupts first roundJohannesburg,
South Africa, 12th February 1998 - Rain and lightning interrupted today's
start of the Alfred Dunhill South African PGA with less than one-third of the
international field able to complete their opening rounds. Paul
Affleck of Wales shot a 5-under-par 67 to lead 51 of the extended field of 156
golfers who managed to complete their rounds. Play
was halted because of lightning before many players had even started. A thunderstorm
covered several of the greens with rain water. The
players were sent out on the course twice in the afternoon to resume play, but
were recalled with lightning still in the area. The first-round will be completed
Friday. Affleck,
whose best finish in Europe was second place in the 1996 Madeira Island Open,
was one in front of European Tour veterans Anders Forsbrand of Sweden and Italy's
Costantino Rocca. South
African Roger Wessels, who won the $660,000 event in 1991, shot 68 and three players
- Oliver Edmond of France, India's Jeev Singh and South African Mark Wiltshire
- were at 69. Defending
champion Nick Price of Zimbabwe shot a 1-under 71 and Australia's Greg Norman,
who won his own tournament in Sydney last weekend, finished with a 72. |
