Johnstone leads rain delayed second round

Johannesburg, South Africa, 13th February 1998 - Tony Johnstone of Zimbabwe had a three-stroke lead after his second round of the rain-troubled South African PGA Championship today.

An 8-under-par 64 in the second round gave Johnstone had a 132 total, 12-under par.

Only about half the field, though, had completed the second round because of rain delays both Thursday and today.

Three strokes behind Johnstone was American Scott Dunlap, who had a 66 in the second round. South African Ernie Els was another three strokes off the pace at 138 following his second straight 69.

Johnstone, who completed three holes at par Thursday before the rain hit, finished the first round at 68, then had 10 birdies and two bogeys in his second round.

Dunlap, who lived in South Africa for two years in the early 1990s before going home to the U.S. PGA Tour, finished his first round at 69 and then highlighted his second round with five straight birdies on the back nine.

Greg Norman and Nick Price begin their second rounds early Saturday. Norman shot a par 72 the first day and Price was one-under at 71.
