Duval shoots 62 for seven stroke lead

Tucson, Arizona, 20th February 1998 - David Duval missed the course record by one stroke today (Friday), and his 10-under-par 62 gave him a comfortable lead in the suspended second round of the $2 million Tucson Chrysler Classic at the Omni Tucson National Resort in Arizona.

The 72 players who failed to complete the round will finish Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. EST. After the cut is made, the third round will be played with a scheduled start of 2:30 p.m. EST.

Duval's short game was magical from the start. He birdied the first, sixth, seventh and eighth holes and eagled Nos. 2 and 9 for 8-under 28, this year's best nine-hole score.

It was his third time under 30 strokes for nine holes on tour.

Duval stands at 16-under 128 through two rounds, seven shots ahead of first-round leader Justin Leonard, who shot a second round 70, and Scott Hoch, who fired a 66. Steve Pate is alone in fourth at 8-under after a 66.

Duval's 62 nearly matched the 61 Johnny Miller shot in 1975. That year, Miller went on to win the event -- then known as the Dean Martin Tucson Open -- with a tournament record 263. That is also the record for the Tucson National course.

The 26-year-old Duval has not finished among the top-three in any of the five PGA tournaments this season after winning the final three events in 1997, but he played to last year's form today.

He began the day at 6-under, a stroke behind Leonard, but quickly jumped into the lead with a birdie on the first hole and an eagle on No. 2. For the round, he registered a pair of eagles, seven birdies and one bogey. He hit 12 greens in regulation, 9-of-14 fairways and needed just 20 putts.

The par-72 course measures 7,148 yards.

First prize is $360,000.
