August 1998 - David Duval shot a four-under-par 66 on Saturday to cling
to a one-stroke lead over surging John Cook after three rounds of the 37th and
final World Series of Golf tournament. Cook
shot a spectacular round of 62, one shot shy of the record at Firestone Country
Club South Course, as he finished the day at eight-under-par 202. Cook
birdied nine of the first 15 holes and would have tied for the lead and matched
Jose Maria Olazabal's course record set in 1990 had he not bogeyed the par-4 17th
hole. Duval,
who is second on the PGA Tour money list with $1,665,283 despite missing the cut
at his last two starts, began the day in a three-way tie for the lead and used
seven birdies to offset three bogeys as he moved to nine-under 201. Former
champion Phil Mickelson, the first-round leader, shot his second 66 in three days
and was alone in third place at seven-under 203. Mickelson
was one shot better than Masters and British Open champion Mark O'Meara and two
ahead of Tiger Woods, who shared the second-round lead with Duval and Australia's
Craig Parry. Parry
shot a two-over 72 to stand at three under par, six strokes behind Duval. Fiji's
Vijay Singh, coming off consecutive victories at the PGA Championship and Sprint
International, stumbled to a one-over 71 and fell nine shots off the pace. The
World Series gives way next year to the World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational,
which will feature the members of the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup teams. The
purse will be increased to $5 million. |
