64 leads by 1
Hale Irwin birdied
five of the first six holes and tied a course record with a 8-under-par 64 Friday
to take a one-stroke lead in the opening round of the Senior PGA Tour's Coldwell
Banker Burnet Classic.
Jim Colbert and David Graham, each seeking their first victories of the year,
had season-low rounds of 65 that featured seven birdies and no bogeys.
Irwin, who has won
four of his last seven senior tournaments, also had a bogey-free round in becoming
the fifth player to post a 64 in the seven-year history of the event at Bunker
Hills golf course.
Irwin set the tournament record of 17-under in winning here in 1997 and was third
at 9-under last year when the tournament was shortened to 36 holes because of
rain. He's played his last six Burnet tournament rounds at 34-under par.
Graham has had only one
top-10 finish this season and ranks 47th on the money list. Colbert ranks 40th
in earnings and has finished no better than 13th in an event since February.
At 66 was Jim Dent, who
eagled the par-5 12th hole on the way to shooting 31 on the incoming nine.
Miller Barber, playing
in his 509th senior tournament, a record, shot his age with a 4-under-par 68.
Barber was in a group of
six at 4-under, joined by Bob Dickson, Dana Quigley, Graham Marsh, Larry Nelson
and Jose Maria Canizares.
Dickson was tied for the lead at 6-under through 10 holes but bogeyed Nos. 11
and 14. Marsh birdied four of the last six holes of a bogey-free round and Nelson
righted his round with an eagle on the par-4 ninth. AP |
