Wilson
wins Nike Dayton Open
John Wilson, a father of four, celebrated Father's Day in style as he shot his
second-consecutive round of 66 on Sunday to win the inaugural $250,000 Nike Dayton
Open by one shot over Brian Tennyson.
Finishing at 20-under par 268, Wilson achieved the lowest winning score on the
Nike Tour this year. Prior to Sunday's victory, he had not posted a top-10 finish
in 27 events, dating back to last April.
Tennyson came in at a 19-under par 269 for his best-ever finish on tour, while
Marco Dawson was third at 17-under.
The win was Wilson's second on tour, and he pocketed $45,000 for the victory.
"This one's better than the first," said Wilson, choking back tears as he dedicated
the win to his mother, who passed away in March. "You just don't know how many
chances you're going to have to win."
Commenting on his gameplan in the final round, Wilson said, "I fired at almost
every pin...The ball was going exactly where I wanted it to."
After birdieing holes 6 and 9 to share the lead with Tennyson at 19-under, Wilson
sank a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 14 to retake the lead, and converted four-straight
pars down the stretch to capture the championship.
As Wilson approached the 18th hole, he knew he needed only to make par to win
the title. His tee shot found the fairway, and he dropped an 80-yard sand wedge
shot 18 feet from the hole on his next shot. His first putt got to within four
inches of the cup, and Wilson tapped in to clinch the victory. TSN |
