Monty
named golfer of the month Colin
Montgomerie's commanding victories in the Benson and Hedges International and
Volvo PGA Championship - first by three strokes, then by five - have won him the
Asprey and Garrard European Tour golfer of the month award for May. The
35-year-old Scot, back to the top of the Order of Merit he has lifted for the
past six seasons, earns £1,000 for the Golf Foundation after being the unanimous
choice of a panel of Association of Golf Writers members and Golf Channel commentator
Warren Humphreys. The
other leading candidates were South African Retief Goosen - first in the French
Open, second in the Deutsche Bank and fourth in the Volvo PGA Championship - 19-year-old
Sergio Garcia, who in his first US Tour event as a professional was joint third
in the Byron Nelson Classic, and Ryder Cup captain Mark James, runner-up to Montgomerie
at Wentworth on Monday.
