Doyle moves into lead

Allen Doyle, in contention for the Senior PGA Tour money crown, shot his second consecutive 66 to take a two-shot lead today over David Graham after two rounds of the Raley's Gold Rush Classic.

Doyle, third on the money list with more than $1.6 million, began the day trailing Graham by three shots. But the second-year senior player had six birdies en route to his second bogeyless round and a 12-under 132 total at Serrano Country Club.

Graham, who equaled the tournament record with an opening-round 63, shot a 71, including a 4-foot birdie on the 18th, under mildly windy conditions.

Larry Mowry, 62, who announced Friday he will retire at the end of the season, shot a second-round 69, good for a 136 total and one-stroke title over Terry Dill in the 36-hole Super Seniors division for players age 60.

Mowry, who will turn 63 next week, is alone in third place at 8 under. He earned $30,000 of the $175,000 Super Seniors purse.

Raymond Floyd (67), who hasn't won on the Senior Tour since 1996, and Dill (69) are tied at 137.

"I played good and I drove the ball good and that sets up this golf course," said Doyle, who has four victories this season but never finished higher than tied for seventh during his brief PGA Tour career.

Bruce Fleisher (68), tied with six others at 138, currently leads the money list with more $2.1 million and has six wins this season.

Hale Irwin, the reigning season earnings titleist, is second with more than $1.9 million, but is not in the tournament.

Three events, including the Senior Tour Championship, remain this season.

Bob Murphy, who began the day eight shots behind Graham, moved into contention at 6-under following an eagle on the 14th. But the former network television analyst bogeyed the 16th on his way to a 69 and a 139 tie with 10 others.

Defending champion Dana Quigley trails Doyle by 10 shots after his second consecutive 71 and a 142 total.

The $1.1 million tournament concludes Sunday with the winner earning $165,000.
