Injury woe for Sam Torrance
Sam Torrance, who had to pull out of
last week's South African Open, has suffered a recurrence of shoulder trouble
in practice for the Heineken Classic at The Vines in Australia.
The Scot came
off the course after playing 15 holes and then withdrew from the eve-of-event
pro-am tomorrow. "I'll just have to see how it is on Thursday. Cape Town and Perth
is a hell of a long way to travel and not be able to play," he reflected.
"I flew here last Thursday, rested and today was the first time I've tried to
hit balls since. But then I started feeling it again, and there was no point going
in."
The 45-year-old had hoped to capitalise on the absence of most of the
tour's stars to improve on his current 16th place in the Ryder Cup table. He has
a history of injury mishaps, which include bruising his sternum falling over a
flowerpot while sleepwalking and hurting his ankle pushing an airport trolley.
To add to Torrance's worries the Perth course was lashed by high winds at
the weekend which destroyed two marquees and blew over a television tower.
