Two
sevens on the front nine in Sunday's final round of the Johnnie Walker Classic
ended defending champion Tiger Woods's hopes of a fifth successive tournament
win.
Overnight leader Michael
Campbell fought off a strong challenge from Australian Geoff Ogilvy to clinch
his first victory for four years.
The New Zealander shot a two-under-par 70 for a four-round total of 276. Ogilvy
carded a 68.
Ernie Els, the
1997 champion, also shot a closing 68 to finish third, two behind Campbell.
Woods's challenge came apart inside three holes on the outward half.
He double-bogeyed the sixth after having to take a drop following a wayward drive
and took a triple bogey on the eighth where he hit his second into water.
Woods battled back with a birdie on the ninth and four further birdies for an
inward half of 32. His round of 71 left him in sixth place, five behind Campbell.
Campbell, who started the
day three ahead of Ogilvy, was tied with Ogilvy and Els, playing two groups ahead,
with four holes to play.
He made a crucial 12-foot birdie putt on the par-four 15th to pull ahead. After
Ogilvy failed to get up and down for a par on the 17th Campbell had the luxury
of a two-stroke cushion playing the 18th.
Ogilvy birdied the last but it was not enough to stop Campbell from claiming the
$215,328 winner's cheque.
"It
has been a long frustrating last four years. Finally, I have got the monkey off
my back," said Campbell.
"After
such a great year in 1995 when I was so near so many times this is great."
