makes most of opportunity Dutchman
Maarten Lafeber carded a 64 on Sunday to win the Tusker Kenya Open. It was his
first European Challenge Tour title. The
24-year-old from Eindhoven, who played in the tournament thanks to an invitation
from Challenge Tour Director Alain de Soultrait, finished at 19-under-par 265,
three strokes ahead of overnight leader Erik Andersson of Sweden. In
third spot at 270 was South African Sammy Daniels, who trimmed three strokes off
the Muthaiga course record with a 61. His round included an eagle and nine birdies.
But the day, as
well as the week, belonged to Lafeber. He played consistently throughout the tournament.
Not even a 45 minute delay for thunder and lightning late in the final round could
upset his rhythm. "I've
been playing strong all week and giving myself a lot of chances," he said after
collecting the first prize of £10,559. "I won the South African Tour School
this year, and credit must go to my coach Ruud Boss." Best
of the British players was Richard Bland from Southampton who closed with a 65
to climb into sixth place at 273. Iain Pyman, with 71, Welshman David Park,
with 66, and Irish veteran David Jones, with 69, shared seventh spot at 274.
