Webb sets LPGA 54 hole record

Australia's Karrie Webb set a 54-hole LPGA scoring record today and set herself up for the best final total ever on the LPGA Tour.

Webb sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the last green for a three-day total of 194, a 54-hole tour record of 22-under par.

She can smash the existing record of 23-under, shared by South Korean Se Ri Pak (1998) and American Wendy Ward (1997) and Canadian Lisa Walters (1998) with another subpar round Sunday.

As her record-breaking putt dropped into the cup, the world's No. 2 player raised her arm in a salute to the big gallery.

Webb broke her own Royal Pines course record on Thursday, shooting a 9-under-par 63, and followed with a 67 Friday and a 64 today to eclipse Wendy Ward's 54-hole LPGA record of 21-under-par in the Fieldcrest Cannon Classic in North Carolina in 1997.

She heads into Sunday's final round leading Scottish player Janice Moodie (67-67-67) by seven shots. Alison Nicholas (68-70-64) is in third, eight shots behind after matching Webb's 64 today.

"Records don't mean all that much if you are not holding up the trophy at the end of the day," Webb said.

Webb, who took a similar huge lead into the final round of the 1997 British Open and won by a big margin, said she couldn't be in a better position after extending her 4-shot lead to seven.

Nicholas, who won last week's Hawaiian Open, started her third round in stunning style with birdies on the opening two holes before claiming a double-eagle on the par-5 third with a spectacular 3-wood out of the light rough and into the hole.

"I saw a guy at the back of the green raise his arms in the air," Nicholas said of her shot. "It was amazing really, I think I'll keep the ball and the card because it's my first 64."
