| Trevino
takes lead
Lee Trevino, looking
ahead to the day when he will sharply curtail his playing scheduled, shot a 5-under-par
67 today to take the lead after the second round of the Las Vegas Senior Classic.
Trevino played
at the par-72 Tournament Players Club at Summerlin today.
But it was his even-par 71 on Thursday at TPC The Canyons that has him in position
to win his first tournament since last June, the Southwestern Bell Dominion.
"It (the wind) really gets
whistling up there" in the afternoon, Trevino said of The Canyons course. "And
the greens are twice as hard as they are here."
Frank Conner was at 4-under after a 69 at TPC The Canyons.
First-day leader Isao Aoki was 4-over in the 30 mph afternoon wind at The Canyons
to drop back to 3-under with Fred Gibson, Vicente Fernandez, Dave Eichelberger
and Dave Stockton.
Fernandez, Eichelberger and Gibson all played even-par at The Canyons.
"I like playing at both
courses," Trevino, 60, said.
On Thursday at The Canyons, Trevino was 2-under entering the last two holes, but
finished with consecutive bogeys to finish at even par.
He stayed at even par through the first six holes on Friday at Summerlin before
making birdies on Nos. 7 and 9. He improved to 3-under with a birdie on No. 12
but then bogeyed the par-3 14th when he put his tee shot into a bunker, pitched
out to four feet and missed the par putt.
Trevino came back with an eagle on No. 15 when he rolled a sand wedge in from
38 yards. He sank an 8-footer for birdie on No. 17.
Despite his success, Trevino said the only fun he's having is giving tips to the
amateurs he's playing with in the tournament. "If
I had something else to do, I'd do it," Trevino said. "I don't enjoy the game
as much as I used to. That's the God's honest truth."
Trevino said he'll curtail his schedule next year to about 15 tournaments and
only those that count in the Super Seniors standings for players 60 and older.
He plans to spend
more time with 6-year-old son Daniel and 10-year-old daughter Olivia. He also
wants to get back into golf course design. "I
wish we'd play with amateurs more," Trevino said. "It gives you something to do.
It relaxes you. I look forward to playing with amateurs. "This
is my last year. I'm going to go out and build some golf courses. I'm only going
to play in Super Seniors and I'm not going to play on Sundays. "I've
never been a fan of travelling. I have a difficult time packing up and leaving
my family and the main thing is I don't need to do it. Financially, I don't have
to play." Divots:
Hale Irwin's 72 round at the TPC at Summerlin extended his streak of consecutive
rounds of par or better to 11. He shot a 1-under 70 at TPC at The Canyons in the
first round of the tournament. The streak started in the second round of the Senior
PGA Championship with a 69-70-69. He was then 72-71-72 at Bruno's Memorial Classic
and 69-68-69 in the Nationwide Championship. ... Jim Albus shot an 8-under 64
at the TPC for the best score of the tournament so far. ... Lee Elder shot an
11-over 83 on Friday, an improvement on his 19-over score on Thursday.
