Montgomerie
shoots 65 to keep pressure on Garcia Colin
Montgomerie shot a 6-under 65 today to put the pressure on first-round leader
Sergio Garcia and take the early clubhouse lead in the second round of the Loch
Lomond tournament.
Montgomerie,
seeking his first victory in his native Scottish, reached the halfway mark at
8-under 134. That put him in second place on the leaderboard behind Garcia, the
19-year-old Spanish sensation who fired a 9-under 62 Wednesday.
Garcia,
who won the Irish Open Sunday in only his sixth tournament as a pro, was teeing
off for his second round just as Montgomerie was finishing.
Montgomerie
had five birdies in the first six holes and made the turn in 31. He collected
a sixth birdie by holing from 10 feet at the 345-yard 14th. He had several other
birdie chances on the back nine but failed to convert.
Among
the other late starters was Sweden's Jesper Parnevik, who trailed Garcia by two
strokes after the opening round.
Nick
Faldo chipped in three times, but finished with only a 70 for a halfway total
of 4-under 138.
Faldo shot
a 33 on the front nine to go 6-under, but despite three successive birdies from
the 14th, he had a bogey at the 10th, a double bogey 7 at the 13th, then two closing
bogeys.
"It was a very eventful
round," Faldo said. ``Inconsistent is the word.''
Former
Open and Masters champion Sandy Lyle appeared certain to miss the halfway cut.
Lyle, who had a 76 Wednesday, eagled the 505-yard third but matched Faldo's double
bogey at the 13th. He finished with a 69 for 3-over 145.
