Inkster in three-way tie at LPGA
Championship Juli Inkster
bogeyed the 18th hole on Saturday to fall into a three-way tie for the lead after
three rounds of the LPGA Championship.
Inkster, missing only the LPGA crown to complete a career Grand slam, finished
with a two-under-par 69 to tie for the 54-hole lead with Nancy Scranton and Cristie
Kerr at 10-under 203.
Scranton
fired a 66 and Kerr carded 69 for their share of the lead atop an impressive leaderboard.
Meg Mallon joined the hunt
by firing a course record, eight-under-par 63 at the DuPont Country Club. That
bogey-free round moved Mallon within a shot of the lead.
Tied with Mallon at nine-under 204 were defending champion Pak Se-ri of South
Korea (67), Rosie Jones (68) and Sweden's Liselotte Neumann (70).
Seven players were bunched two more shots back, including Britons Trish Johnson
and Alison Nicholas, Jenny Lidback of Peru, Canadian Lorie Kane and Americans
Muffin Spencer-Devlin, Sara Sanders and Tammie Green.
The rejuvenated Inkster, who turned 39 two days ago, won the U.S. Women's Open
earlier this season among the three titles she has claimed this year after notching
only two in her previous six seasons combined.
Since the Dinah Shore became the fourth major championship on the women's calendar
in 1983, only Pat Bradley has won all four Grand Slam events. Inkster twice won
the Dinah Shore and triumphed at the 1994 du Maurier Classic.
Inkster has even more riding on a victory here.
A win here would also move Inkster within a point, or one more victory, of automatic
entry to the LPGA Hall of Fame. The $210,000 first prize also would push her
past Webb for the top spot on the money list.
Scranton, 38, is aiming to add the LPGA Championship to the 1991 du Maurier crown
she won for her first tour title. Kerr, 21, is shooting for her first LPGA Tour
title.
