Webb
holds onto lead after second round
NAPLES, Fla. (January
22, 1999) Karrie Webb added another shot to her lead in the Naples LPGA Memorial
with a 3-under-par 69 today at The Club at Pelican Strand.
After setting a course record Thursday with a 63, Webb battled strong wind to
get to 12-under today. She holds a three-shot lead over Liselotte Neumann and
a four-shot lead over Meg Mallon, Hollis Stacy and Karen Weiss heading into Saturday's
third round. "It
was a lot tougher than yesterday," said Webb, who is shooting for her first victory
since last April's City of Hope Myrtle Beach Classic. "Shooting 3-under with the
wind today was a good score."
Webb, who started on the back nine, began with a birdie on the par-4 10th hole
and an eagle on the par-5 11th. But strong wind kept her in check for most of
the round. She
did get to 13-under with a 4-foot birdie putt on the third hole, but gave it right
back with a bogey on No. 4. She then finished the round with five consecutive
pars. After last
week's second-place finish behind Kelly Robbins in the HealthSouth Inaugural,
Webb said she has a new outlook on golf. The confidence that helped her win seven
times in her first two seasons on the LPGA Tour is back. "I've
been a bit more relaxed these past two weeks," Robbins said. "I've got positive
thoughts. I'm pretty hard on myself. I might ease off when I get older, but that
is why I am where I am today. I'm kind of a perfectionist."
Coincidentally, Webb went into last week's final round with a five-shot lead over
Robbins. With two rounds to go this week, Webb is five up again on Robbins.
"There are still two days
left," said Robbins, who shot a 68 on Friday. "She should be just as concerned
about me coming from behind. But that's the kind of respect we have for one and
the other's games." DIVOTS:
With forecasts calling for thunderstorms Friday afternoon, Tour officials moved
up the tee times with players going off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees from 8-10 a.m.
... The windy conditions didn't hurt Meg Mallon. She shot a 5-under 67 to get
into contention. It was one of only two 67s on the day (Rachel Hetherington had
the other) after 13 rounds at 67 or better on Thursday. ... If Hollis Stacy can
come from behind and win, it will be her first victory since the 1991 Crestar-Farm
Fresh Classic. Under proposed new LPGA Hall of Fame criteria, she would be four
points shy of qualifying. As it stands, she would need 12 more victories. ...
