Mast
wins after closing 63
Dick Mast fired a seven-under-par 63 on Sunday and rolled to a three-shot win
over Joel Edwards at the Nike New Mexico Classic. Mast finished with a four-day
total of 13-under 267 and earned a first-prize of $40,500 for his first win since
the 1990 Fort Wayne Classic on the Hogan Tour.
The 48-year-old Mast vaulted from 33rd on the money list to 15th, with only the
season-ending Tour Championship remaining on the schedule. If Mast can finish
within the top-15 on the money list, he would earn a trip to the PGA Tour next
season. "It always
feels good to win," said Mast, who became the oldest player to ever win on the
Nike Tour. "It's good to have it in your memory bank."
Mast and Edwards started the final round tied for the lead, but Mast quickly took
control with birdies at the first two holes. He muffed his drive at the par-five
fifth, hitting it only about 150 yards, but was able to recover and save his par.
"I knew he had
it going at that point," said Edwards.
Mast then birdied three of the next four holes and opened a three-shot lead with
nine holes to play. Edwards never threatened on the back nine.
Edwards has guaranteed himself a trip to the PGA Tour next year, as the second-prize
of $25,538 moved into second place on the money list.
Casey Martin inched closer to a spot on the PGA Tour. He finished third this weekend
at nine-under par and is 12th on the money list heading into the Tour Championship.
Second-round leader
Darron Stiles and Matt Gogel tied for fourth at eight-under.
This was the final full-field event on the Nike Tour this season. The top-50 money
winners will play in the Nike Tour Championship, starting October 21 in Dothan,
Alabama. |
