Ernie Els - Carnoustie a stern test

South African Ernie Els played his first practice round at Carnoustie for next week's Open and said: "I've never seen rough like it.

"If I could get a good bet, I'd bet that four over par will win.

"It's quite unbelievable and I'll be quite happy when the crowds come in and trample it down a bit.

"I really played well and I think I would have been about one or two over if I had kept a score."

After his round Els returned to his home at Wentworth to work on his short game.
