Complete Open qualifying roundup & scores

Zane Scotland, a 16-year-old Surrey amateur with a father from the Dominican Republic and a mother from Northern Ireland, booked his place in the Open on Monday.

Scotland added a 71 at Downfield to go with his opening 69 to finish six under par and will now rub shoulders with the game's greatest names on Thursday.

A member of the England Boys squad, he faced an anxious wait at the Dundee course to see if he had made the cut for Carnoustie.

But on Monday night he is celebrating with his dad Bernie, who has been at his side the past two days, after becoming one of the youngest players ever to appear in the championship.

Spanish sensation Sergio Garcia played at Lytham in 1996 at the age of 16 years and six months after being exempt from qualifying. Zane is 17 on Saturday.

A member of Woodcote Park, where he holds the course record, he arrived at Downfield as 35th alternate after scoring a 71 in pre-qualifying at Romford.

Scotland said: "I felt I was on line to get through today and it is marvellous to be going to Carnoustie.

"I have been striking the ball really well recently and the last two days have been all that I could have hoped for.

"Downfield is a fantastic course and was playing really true, which helped my game a lot."

Scotland wasn't put off by the fog-delayed start today and went to the turn in 36 to remain four under par.

He opened with a birdie three at the 425-yard first only to follow it with two bogeys.

However he quickly recovered by picking up shots at the fifth and the seventh to stay with the leading pack.

Followed by a large gallery and in the company of the experienced Robert Allenby, Scotland kept a cool head in the blistering summer sun.

And he had the crowd gasping in astonishment at the 515-yard 14th with an audacious birdie.

Scotland hooked his drive into the undergrowth and could only push his second behind a group of tall trees.

He lofted a seven iron high into the air, only to find a greenside bunker and it seemed he would have to settle for a par at best.

But he played a marvellous recovery from the sand to hole his approach.

Scotland picked up a par at the next but was out of luck at the 16th when his putt for a birdie lipped the hole and stayed up.

Scotland said: "The bunker shot at the 14th was definitely the highlight of the round.

"I think one of my strengths is that I tend to put bad shots behind me and get on with my game."

Scotland first picked up a club when he was 11 after caddying for his dad, who is a 12-handicap member at Woodcote Park.

His progress has been nothing short of startling and he took the senior club championship in 1996 and 1997.

He became indebted to Derek Keppler for his support and encouragement and was deeply saddened when the club's junior organiser died last December.

Scotland then went on to lift the prestigious Lagonda Trophy for top amateurs in May to become the youngest ever winner.

Just a couple of weeks later he broke the course record at Woodcote Park with a 64 during a club medal.

Woodcote Park secretary Tony Fensom said: "Everyone in the club is absolutely delighted.

"We had a big tournament here yesterday but all everyone wants to talk about was Zane. He is the nicest lad you would care to meet and the experience won't go to his head."

Luke Donald, who used to be a room-mate of Justin Rose during their time at junior level, equalled the course record at Panmure to seal his place at Carnoustie.

Donald, a member of the Great Britain and Ireland team which won the World team title in Chile, shot a five-under par 65 for a total of 135.

He chalked up six birdies during his round, with his only blemish coming at the fifth where he three-putted.

The 21-year-old from Beaconsfield attributed his success to the coaching he is receiving in the United States where he is halfway through a four-year course at North Western University, Chicago.

He has won five times on the college circuit, including the top event, the NCAA tournament.

"My game has come on a lot while I have been over there," he said. "My college has one of the best facilities in America."

Donald twice came up against Sergio Garcia on the amateur circuit and remains unbeaten against the Spaniard, beating him in one match and halving the other.

Now he would like nothing better than to emulate Rose, who took the Open by a storm last year.

"For the moment I am just happy to qualify and I will take one step at a time," said Donald. "My first aim is to make the cut."

Padraig Harrington, one of the Ryder Cup hopefuls squeezed through at Panmure thanks to a second round 67 to finish on a two under par 138.

"I got the putts when I needed them but I also missed several good chances," said Harrington, who is currently 17th in the table.

Two players had holes in one at the course, Gordon Sherry at the fourth, and Andrew Hare at the 11th. But both failed to make the cut.

Panmure also saw the hard luck story of the day with Sheffield's John Mellor driving out of bounds at the last for a triple bogey seven. One shot less would have given him a place in the play-offs.

Sweden's Per Ulrik Johansson, another Ryder Cup contender and a member of the last two teams, led the qualifiers at Montrose.

He added a 69 today to his opening 63 to boost his hopes of playing against the United States.

"I really tried to play as well as I could but the motivation wasn't there," said Johansson, who also qualified for the US Open.

Alex Cejka, lying tenth in the Ryder Cup table and currently an automatic selection, failed to make it to Carnoustie after finishing on 140 at Montrose.

There was disappointment for John Bickerton at Monifieth where he failed to make the cut after carding a 67 for a 141 total.

Overnight leader, the South African Wayne Westner, blew his chances with an 81 to miss out by eight shots.

Harrington's World Cup-winning partner Paul McGinley, himself 20th in the Ryder Cup race, made it through at Panmure, but only after a four-hole play-off.

Five players were gunning for four places and after Surrey's Andrew Raitt and Spaniard Santiago Luna made it through with birdies at the first and Mancunian Ross McFarlane at the second McGinley qualified when American David Sutherland bogeyed the fourth.

Scottish professional Allan MacDonald sank a dramatic 35-foot putt to settle the five-for-three play-off at Monifieth - a play-off which started on the second hole because a flock of swans landed on the first fairway.

Japan's Toru Kinoshita went out straightaway, Spain's Pedro Linhart and Venezuelan Gilberto Morales parred the next to qualify and then MacDonald's putt ended the hopes of Cheshire professional Neil Price.

Six players were left to battle for one place at Downfield - but that instantly became five for one when Spaniard Diego Borrego, having made the play-off despite a triple bogey eight at the last, failed to return in time.

Welshman Michael Macara bogeyed the first to go out and there was no joy either for Yorkshire's Stephen Field or Hertfordshire amateur David Griffiths, who broke the Copt Heath course record in regional qualifying last Monday. Swede Pierre Fulke emerged successful.
