Notes from Friday
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP)
Three-time champion Nick Faldo left Carnoustie in haste after missing the cut
for the first time in 24 British Opens. Faldo,
also a three-time Masters titlist, didn't waste much time leaving the links after
his second-round 79. Added to the 78 he made in the first round, that left him
15 over par, three strokes higher than the cut. Telling
his caddie, Fanny Sunesson, to head for the car park, Faldo paused only to make
one remark to waiting media. "I
played lousy, putted lousy," he said. ``That's all I can say.'' WELL
DONE, TOM: Five-time champion Tom Watson missed the British Open cut by one
stroke. But he achieved his real goal at Carnoustie. He
finally avoided a bogey at the par-3 16th. When
Watson won the first of his five titles at Carnoustie in 1975, he bogeyed the
250-yard hole five times, including the 18-hole playoff he had with Australia's
Jack Newton. He
also bogeyed it on Thursday on the way to an 11-over 82, But in Friday's second
round, the 49-year-old American made a birdie. "My
sole objective when I got here was to par 16, and I still haven't done it," Watson
said. "But that's OK. "I
chuckled to myself when the putt went in. I thought `You've finally done it, Watson."'
70 OVER R:
Don't tell the Royal and Ancient, but three pros who played the British Open at
Carnoustie together actually played an extra round. All
three -- Englishmen Simon McCarthy and Greg Owen and Australia's Mark Allen --
missed the cut. McCarthy
wound up 29 over par, Allen was 24-over and Owen 17-over. That totals 70 strokes,
and is the equivalent of another round of golf. McCarthy's
rounds were 82 and 89, Allen carded 80 and 86 and Owen had 78 and 81.
ODDS AND ENDS:
Rodney Pampling became the first opening-round leader to miss the cut at the British
Open. The 30-year-old Australian followed up his first-round even-par 71 with
an 86 to miss the cut by three. ... Some 92,500 fans attended the British Open's
first two days of play and the practice days. Organizers said that 28,500 watched
play on Thursday and 34,000 were at Carnoustie on Friday. They estimated 30,000
watched the players on the practice days. AP
