Justin Rose's growing pains continue

Justin Rose's growing pains continued in cruel fashion as he missed the cut in the £400,000 Algarve Portuguese Open by one shot.

The Hampshire teenager was left cursing a costly lapse in concentration which ruined his hopes of making the last two rounds for the first time in 15 attempts as a professional.

At one stage the 18-year-old was just four shots off the lead, held at six-under by first round pacesetter Des Smyth. Coming to the last two holes Rose still had a chance to qualify. A par and a bogey would have been good enough but he could only manage two bogeys to agonisingly miss out by one stroke at four-over.

"I never thought that the mental part of my game would be a weakness but today showed that I can have lapses in concentration," Rose said.
