Phillips wins Portuguese Open
Van Phillips won the Portuguese Open
-- his first European PGA Tour victory -- after fellow Englishman John Bickerton
bogeyed the only hole of their playoff Sunday.
Both
had final-round scores of 4-under-par 68 and were tied at 12-under, three shots
clear of the field, at the end of regulation play on the 6,875-yard Le Meridien
Penina course.
Bickerton
hit his third shot on the par-4 extra hole into a bunker and settled for his bogey.
Then, Phillips made a short par putt to claim the first prize of $100,785.
"It feels great and I feel
relieved, actually," Phillips said. ``I've always felt I had the temperament to
win, and it's been frustrating not to win."
Tied
for third were Robert Karlsson of Sweden, Germany's Alex Cejka and Spaniard Santiago
Luna.
Anthony Wall of England
was another stroke behind, and England's Daren Lee and Craig Hainline of the United
States shared seven place.
The
$604,800 tournament in southern Portugal's Algarve region was the first European
PGA event of the year on the continent.
