The reason why the U.S. point total adds up to 20 1/2 and Europe's 23 1/2 is that
each golfer is credited with a point for a win and a 1/2 point for a half in a
foursomes or fourball match, so after the first two days if you added up all the
individual points, the U.S. total would be 12 and Europe's 20. You then add in
8 1/2 singles points for U.S. on Sunday, and that's where the 20 1/2 comes from.
For Europe, you add in 3 1/2 singles points, and that's how you come up with 23
1/2 total.
