Tiger Woods coasts to TPC win
Tiger Woods coasted to a three-stroke
victory in the Deutsche Bank Open today, ending a four-month spell without a victory
Woods rolled in a 25-foot-putt
for birdie on the 15th hole en route to his third straight 4-under-par 68, which
gave him a 273 total in his debut on the European PGA Tour.
Woods
took the lead against six players ranked among the world Top 10 midway through
the second round, and stayed in front. He was three strokes ahead going into today's
round.
He earned $200,000
for the victory, and reportedly received $1 million for showing up.
The German crowds took to Woods from
the start, and turned out in large numbers to see him play. He drew more than
60,000 over the four days, a huge crowd for the country.
He
was greeted with a rousing ovation on his final hole.
South
African Retief Goosen fired a final-round 66 to take second place at 276, while
Zimbabwe's Nick Price made the last run at the 1997 Masters champion before finishing
at 277.
Price, another top-ranked
player paid money to appear, had barely made the cut at 3-over 146 after the second
round as blowing winds kept scores high.
But
he fired a blistering 65 Sunday, then moved to 9-under with a string of six birdies
in his first 11 holes. Another birdie on the 11th pulled him to within four, before
his double bogey ended the last challenge to Woods.
Other
players like first-day leader Ernie Els, 19-year-old Sergio Garcia of Spain and
Colin Montgomerie of Scotland made brief runs at Woods, but the American dominated
starting with the second round.
