Heintz
earns first Nike Tour victory
Bob Heintz birdied
the final hole to earn his first Nike Tour victory, a one-stroke victory at the
Shreveport Open. Heintz
capped a final-round even-par 72 by two-putting on the 18th hole to earn the $40,500
first prize. His four-round total of 5-under 283 was one shot better than Joel
Edwards and Craig Bowden. Needing
a birdie on the par-5 18th to clinch the victory, Heintz reached the green in
two before two-putting from 30 feet. "My
hands were shaking on that first putt," Heintz said. "I took two practice strokes
and I normally only take one. The first stroke was way too fast. "I
was solid from six feet in all week and that last one was too easy to miss. All
I had to do was stab it in." Heintz,
a three-time Ivy League champion at Yale, climbed from 105th place to seventh
on the Nike Tour money list. Defending
champion Vance Veazey also shot 72 and headed a tie for fourth place at 3-under
that included Marco Gortana, Jay Delsing, Sam Randolph and Jim McGovern.
Edwards, who earned $22,050
for his second-place tie, just missed his second win of the year. He claimed the
Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic in February. "I
drove it good and played good," he said. "I knew Id have to shoot something in
the 60s." |
