Graham, Hall share first-round lead

David Graham and Walter Hall shot 6-under 66s today and shared the first-round lead at the $1.1 million Southwestern Bell Dominion seniors tournament.

Graham, the 1997 champion, had six birdies and an eagle, while Hall had six birdies at the 6,835-yard course at The Dominion Country Club.

"I was very pleased with the way I played," said Graham, the former PGA and U.S. Open champion on the regular tour who is 46th on the senior money list. "I putted extremely well, which was the difference today. There were no blemishes. I drove it straight and hit my irons well."

Eight golfers were one stroke back, led by Bruce Fleisher, the Senior PGA Tour's leading money-winner leader who has won four tournaments in his rookie year.

Tied with Fleisher were Gibby Gilbert, Vicente Fernandez, Dana Quigley, Tom Jenkins, Hugh Baiocchi, Tom Shaw and John Mahaffey.

Seven golfers were at 68: Fred Gibson, Tom McGinnis, Tom Wargo, Jimmy Powell, Graham Marsh, Jim Colbert and Howard Twitty.

Graham, a native of Australia who lives in Dallas, has finished in the top 10 only once this year, a tie for eighth place in February at the GTE Classic. He finished tied for third at the Legends of Golf in March, which is not counted as official money.

Last year, Graham won the Royal Caribbean Classic and he won three events in 1997.

Hall - who's in his third year on the senior tour but never played on the PGA Tour - has never finished higher than second. This year he has six top 10 finishes.

"I hit a lot of good second shots to the green, especially on par-5s," Hall said. "With three par-5s playing downwind, the course plays just a little easier."

Fleisher won last week's BellSouth Senior Classic.

"I got up at 3:30 this morning ready to play," said Fleisher, who had six birdies. "I hit a lot of good iron shots and did drive the ball well. I am still on a high from last week."

One golfer who did not fare well was defending champion Lee Trevino, who had a 2-over 74. Trevino, a three-time Dominion champion, had four bogeys and only two birdies.

"I don't care about defending my title," said Trevino, who also won in 1991 and 1992. "I'm not playing very well but I enjoyed myself, and the course is in good shape."
