Mahaffey leads after two rounds

John Mahaffey had five birdies and an eagle in a 5-under 67 today and took a one-stroke lead over three golfers after two rounds of the $1.1 million Southwestern Bell Dominion seniors tournament.

The 51-year-old Mahaffey, ranked 13th on the money list, was at 10-under 134 after two trips around the 6,835-yard course at The Dominion Country Club. Play was halted for 35 minutes in the late afternoon because of rain.

"The last two days I played pretty solid," said Mahaffey, a native of nearby Kerrville who lives at both The Woodlands and San Antonio. "I hit a lot of greens and made some very good putts."

The 1978 PGA champion, who has six top 10 finishes this year, started the day in a group of eight golfers one shot behind co-leaders Walter Hall and David Graham.

The pack in second had only three Saturday: Gil Morgan, Hugh Baiocchi and Bruce Fleisher.

Fleisher, the leading money winner on the Senior PGA Tour, has already won four tournaments in his rookie season. He had six birdies in a second-round 68.

"It would be nice if I could get in the hunt tomorrow," Fleisher said about the final round. "I have to put myself into position."

Morgan, the winner of 13 senior titles, including six last year, began the day at 2 under, but missed the course record by one stroke with a 64 Saturday.

The 52-year-old Morgan had eight birdies, including a string of three in a row.

"I hit my irons fairly close to the hole," Morgan said. "The last few weeks I've played at a higher level, but I'm still making minor mistakes."

Baiocchi, a three-time winner as a senior, had a 68.

Fred Gibson, who had a 68, and Gibby Gilbert, who had a 69, were at 136.

Hall followed his opening 66 with a 71, while Graham, the 1997 Dominion champion, ballooned to a 75.

Defending champion Lee Trevino, who has won this event three times, shot a 71 Saturday and was at 145.

The two-day $175,000 Georgia-Pacific Super Seniors title, for golfers age 60 and over, went to Tom Shaw. The 60-year-old won his second Super Seniors title of the year, and $30,000, by shooting a 71 for a 6-under 138 total. Butch Baird, Jim Ferree and Tommy Aaron tied for second at 143.

Shaw is tied for 11th place in the main tournament.
