McGovern moves into lead

Jim McGovern fired a five-under-par 67 on Friday and has moved atop the leaderboard at eight-under par after two rounds of the Tri-Cities Open in Washington. First-round co-leader Shane Supple is alone in second place at seven-under, while Casey Martin, also a first-round co-leader, is tied with four others at minus-six.

McGovern won the 1993 Houston Open on the PGA Tour and is trying to get back. He has four top-10 finishes on the Nike Tour this year and is 25th on the money list. The top-15 receive promotions to the PGA Tour for 2000.

"I think I'm just going to stick it out here and earn my card this way," said McGovern. "I like my chances over five or six weeks than I do over five or six days in Tour School Qualifying. If it doesn't happen, it's not due to lack of effort. I have been working pretty hard."

Supple followed up his opening-round 66 with a one-under 71, while Martin, who is 15th on the money list, carded an even-par 72 on Friday after his first-round 66.

Joining Martin at six-under are Ren Budde, Jim J. Johnson, Don Reese and Jerry Foltz.

Defending champion Matt Gogel, who is second on the money list this year, is tied for 37th at one-under par.

A total of 57 players made the even-par cut.
