McGovern's wild round included six birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey.
"I'm just happy to be where
I'm at and try and play a solid round (Sunday)," said McGovern, who won the 1993
Houston Open on the PGA Tour.
Defending champion Matt Gogel, who is second on the money list this year, is tied
for 35th at one-under par after carding an even-par 72 on Saturday.
