Jimenez wins Turespana Masters title again

Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez defended his Turespana Masters title Sunday, using two key bunker shots to repulse a challenge from England's Steve Webster and triumph in his hometown.

Jimenez shot a 5-under 67 in the final round of the $545,000 tournament at the Parador golf course. He finished at 24-under 264, earning $91,000.

Jimenez finished four strokes ahead of Webster. Third was Raphael Jacquelin of France at 269, followed by Marc Farry, also of France, at 271.

It was Jimenez's fifth win on the European circuit, and virtually guaranteed him a place on the European team that will face the United States in the Ryder Cup at Boston in September.

Jimenez started quickly, making an eagle at the first hole and adding two birdies in the first six holes.

But with Webster, Sweden's Per-Ulrik Johansson and Jacquelin scoring birdies consistently, Jimenez lost his concentration at the seventh hole and drove out of bounds, which cost him a double bogey.

At the ninth hole, he missed a putt from three feet for a bogey.

"I lost three strokes. The other players were on their way up and I was on my way down," Jimenez said. "But I stayed confident.''

Still, by the 14th hole Jimenez's lead over Webster had slipped to one stroke. But at 14, Jimenez made an eagle from the bunker, the second such shot of the day. The first bunker shot came at the 10th for a birdie.

After the 14th, the pack failed to make any more birdies and Jimenez held on to his title.

"It was great to win here at home with my family and friends," Jimenez said.
