facts Through May 12, the Bay Area had received 110 consecutive
days of measurable rainfall
While mowing heights and green speeds reached
their maximums in 1987, other tactics can be used to keep scores down. As noted
below, the rough will be higher, the intermediate rough width around the green
will be much narrower, the putting green collar will be narrower and the fairway
width will be reduced by an average of two feet. The type of sand and the maintenance
will also have an impact. Shots landing in the fine, fluffy sand in 1998 will
tend to result in more buried lies...The 1955 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club was
the first to have any appreciable rough. In some areas, the rough was knee deep
The
17th hole will be switched from a par 5 to a par 4, playing at 468 yards. That
is 25 yards longer than 1987
Ninth and 17th fairway angles reshaped by adjusting
cutting height; New 12th championship tee adds 15 yards; 15th hole redesigned
by Morrish & Weiskopf, still par 3
Golf Course Superintendent John Fleming
was a spectator at the 1966 U.S. Open, and served as superintendent in 1987 and
will do so in 1998
The Ocean Course at Olympic Club is located on the San
Andreas fault line.
