Westwood stunned by Tiger's big drive

The Olympic Club, San Francisco, 20th June 1998 - Lee Westwood could not believe his eyes on Saturday - after seeing Tiger Woods unleash a drive that measured 381 yards down the first fairway at the Olympic Club.

"I thought I had hit a good one myself," said the 25-year-old from Worksop of his opening drive in the third round at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

"As we walked up the fairway I could only see one ball and I thought I must have gone into the rough. But when we got to the ball it was mine - and Tiger just kept on walking.

"It was 70 yards ahead of me down a ridge. I've never seen a bigger hit."

Woods needed only a wedge into the 533-yard hole against Westwood's four-iron.

But the young British star had the last laugh, grabbing a closing birdie to beat Woods by one with a level par 70 that kept him at six over par. Both need something sensational on Sunday, though, to have a chance.
