force Hart and Tolles to withdraw
The Olympic Club, San Francisco, 18th June 1998 - Dudley Hart and
Tommy Tolles withdrew from the U.S. Open today at The Olympic Club. Hart
withdrew following the first round because of a wrist injury. He shot 78 (38-40)
today. Hart's career almost came to an end when he injured his wrist in June of
1995 when his iron struck a tree root. He suffered torn ligaments and tried to
play on tour, which led to three torn ligaments. After the season ended he had
wrist surgery. Tolles
withdrew following his second shot on the sixth hole due to a pulled lateral torso
muscle. Tolles had injured his back earlier in the week, but felt he had healed
sufficiently enough to play. "If
it had been any other tournament, I wouldn't have teed it up," Tolles said.
"I couldn't take a practice swing without pain." Tolles
finished tied for fifth in last year's U.S. Open at Congressional. Because
both players withdrew after they started play, neither will be replaced in the
field. |
