Encouraging golfers to share Turner's art
June 21, 2011

Legendary romantic artist JMW Turner - the 'painter of light' -  once famously hailed the skies over the Kent coast as  "the loveliest in all Europe".

Turner drew huge inspiration from the stunning coastal landscape for many of his best-known paintings. And the unique quality of light in this corner of the UK can also benefit golfers visiting the Garden of England for a golf break available through  www.visitkent.co.uk/golf , the county's official tourism website.

Not only will golfers enjoy the sensational views, framed against the backdrop of the English Channel, but they can also visit the world-acclaimed Turner Contemporary Gallery, recently opened on Margate seafront - the largest exhibition space in south-east England (bar London).

A significant addition to Margate's many attractions will be the regenerated Heritage Dreamland Amusement Park, due to open in 2013. The park will turn back the clock by creating a distinctly British attraction boasting a wide array of thrilling and historic rides and amusements.

The world-acclaimed Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate is sure to prove a big hit with golfers visiting Kent on a golf break.

Margate, along with its twin seaside resorts of Ramsgate and Broadstairs, is situated within easy reach of the celebrated 'Regal Golf Coast' links golf courses: Royal St George's (host venue of this year's Open Championship from July 14-17), Prince's (home of the 1932 Open), Royal Cinque Ports (venue of the 1909 and 1920 Opens), Littlestone (an England Top 100 Course) and North Foreland - all situated along Kent's picturesque south-east coastline - along with fantastic downland, parkland and castle courses, such as London Golf Club (a European Tour venue near Brands Hatch racetrack) and Chart Hills (a UK Top 100 Course, designed by the legendary Sir Nick Faldo).

Many excellent-value golf-break packages in the Garden of England are offered through a recently announced partnership between Visit Kent,  Golfbreaks.com  -  Europe's largest golf travel company - and Shepherd Neame, the renowned Kent-based brewer, pub and hotel operator. The county boasts a plethora of other top tourist attractions, and high quality, graded accommodation and restaurants.

Sandra Matthews-Marsh, Chief Executive of Visit Kent, said: "The  Turner Contemporary Gallery is an integral part of the exciting revival of Margate as Kent's new cultural heart that will include, in the near future, the Heritage Dreamland Amusement Park designed to offer visitors a  classic amusement park experience.

"Kent's coastal attractions, together with our acclaimed golf courses, will serve to open up Kent as a premier destination for long and short golf breaks, both in the year of The Open Championship and those to come."
